St.  John The Baptist, The Last of the Prophets, and The Precursor of Christ the Messiah: Sanctified in the womb of his mother, St. Elizabeth, St. John the Baptist was a kinsman of Jesus Christ.  St. John spent his youth and early manhood until age 30 in prayer and penance in the desert, then he preached penance and baptism in preparation for the coming of the Redeemer, finally baptizing Our Lord Himself and proclaiming Him "the Lamb of God." St. John the Baptist was beheaded by order of Herod Antipas while enduring imprisonment by the same ruler for denouncing Herod's adulterous and incestuous marriage to his half-brother's wife.
