Amen.

St. Clare, Foundress of the Poor Clares: Born in Assisi of a noble family in 1194, St. Clare refused to marry at age twelve, and at age eighteen ran away from her family on Palm Sunday night of the year 1212 to take the vows of religion and receive the Franciscan habit from St. Francis of Assisi.  She was joined by her sister Agnes, who also ran away from home and who was miraculously preserved from being dragged back home by 12 armed men sent by her father.  Later, both daughters were joined by another sister and by their mother.  St. Clare and her followers lived solely on alms; like St. Francis, they loved the virtue of poverty.  St. Clare suffered from illness for 27 years.  She also performed many miracles.  When the soldiers of Emperor Frederick II's army on the attack were scaling the convent walls, St. Clare, though ill, had herself carried out to the gate.  There she had the Blessed Sacrament set up in sight of the enemy.  She pleaded with Our Lord to spare her “children," the nuns.  Our Lord answered her, "I will have them always in My care." The marauders suddenly fled.  St. Clare is often pictured with a monstrance to commemorate this miraculous deliverance.  She died in 1253.
