Introductory Prayer to Mary,
Refuge of Sinners.
O Immaculate Virgin Mary, O Mother of God and Queen of Heaven, from thy lofty throne on which thou art seated, deign to look with eyes of pity upon us thy children, gathered here to speak thy praises. We pray thee, O purest Virgin, to accept this novena which we dedicate to thee. Hear us, O all-beautiful Lady, who even from the first moment of thy existence wast spotless in the sight of God. Grant us our petitions. Remember, O dearest Queen, that we were not only born in sin, but were also defiled by it after we had been cleansed by baptism. O Mary, thou art the safe refuge of the penitent sinner. It is very fitting then that we should have recourse to thee. O most amiable Mother, cast but a single glance of thy love on us, on our families, on our country, and on the whole Catholic Church.
Intention: To hate sin.
O most pure Virgin, Heavenly Queen, have mercy on us poor sinners, who are loaded down with debts to the Divine Justice. How horrible now are those sins which soiled our hearts, which closed Heaven for us and opened up the abyss of hell! O Mary, with what black ingratitude have we acknowledged the infinite goodness of our Heavenly Father. Enlighten our mind, O Mother of mercy, and show us how ungrateful we are to our dear Lord when we commit sin. Strengthen our will and inflame our heart to avoid evil as the most hideous thing on earth. For this we pray, O sweet Refuge of sinners, on this first day of novena.
Prayer to be pure of heart.
O Mary Immaculate, O Comforter of the afflicted, we give thanks to God, our Creator, for having preserved thee from every shin of sin. Do thou, O, Daughter of the Eternal Father, intercede for us at the great white throne of His Divine Majesty. We hear thee called by all the refuge of sinners, the help of the abandoned, and the hope of the despairing. Then be, O Mother, our refuge, our help, and our hope. Assist us for the love of Jesus Who died for us. Please lend thy hand to poor fallen sinners, who recommend them selves to thee. O Lady, do not disdain to look upon us miserable beggars at thy feet. Oh! abandon us not. We know that if we had always sought thy protection, if we had invoked thee in danger, we should never have fallen. O miraculous Virgin, who art so beautiful in the eyes of the angels, thou dost embrace with motherly affection the sinner who is despised by the whole world. Moreover, thou dost not leave him until he is reconciled to his Heavenly Father. O glorious Mary, full of grace, we who have lost the grace of God now place ourselves in thy care. Win back for us the favor of our God, O Lady most potent. Ask Him to pardon us and He will forgive. Tell Him, O make us pure of heart and to cleanse our souls white as snow. We resolve never more to sin again. Make known to us, O Queen of the universe, how we are to live aright in this world, and we do it without delay. Only add thy saving voice to our cry before the throne of God, O dearest Benefactress, and we will be thy devoted servants forever. Amen.
Five Our Fathers and Hail Marys.
Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy! Hail, our life, our sweetness, and our hope! To thee do we cry poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, morning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us; and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.
